What kind of classes does New Moves offer?
Class Descriptions
D.S.A. (Dance, Sing & Act)
Stretch your child's imagination three ways! Our signature program trains students in the art of ‘the triple threat'. Students learn all three disciplines of dance, singing & drama in the one convenient class; saving you money and time travelling between activities. DSA provides variety & promotes versatility; producing confident, young ‘all round' performers. You will see this style of performer in any musical theatre style show.
New Ballet
Ballet is the basis of most dance styles and is important for developing strength & technique. This class incorporates the grace & poise of classical technique along with the beauty of balletic dance steps. New Ballet is part of the OCEAN BEACH BALLET CO. syllabus. New Ballet promotes long lean muscles, well supported posture and carriage of the body. French is the language of ballet and all steps are introduced by their correct terminology to introduce students to another language. A bonus feature of this program is a modern dance component bringing it up to date with current international dance company trends. As your child progresses in dance it is best to have them involved in at least one technical ballet class per week.
Pointe Work
An advanced ballet class danced in pointe shoes. Students need to be 12 years or over and have had prior ballet training. The director will assess your readiness to join this class which covers both barre and centre practice.
Mini Moves Ballet
Our youngest students are also our most valued. Great care has been taken to develop a program that enhances pre-school development while fostering a love of dance and movement. Based on educational and developmental research this class combines an introduction to the world of dance and music with mime and imaginative play.
Mini Move & Groove
An introduction to funky jazz dance that all little ones love. This class is for the child that loves to dance to “Hi 5” or “The Wiggles” in the family lounge room. Now this little star can step into a real dance studio and learn the moves they love. Great for developing co-ordination and listening skills, this class is fun, fun, fun.
First Steps In Dance
This is the first formal introduction to the ballet world for little girls 5-6yrs. Children are introduced to the barre where all ballet training begins. They learn the foundations of the training system which promotes good posture, grace and manners. There are plenty of opportunities for dancing in set exercises or improvised imaginative ways. This is a wonderful beginning for a young dancer to experience the fairy tale magic that is ballet.
Tap Dance
Tap Dance is built on rhythm. Tap requires co-ordination and can be a challenging style, but it is also one of the most vibrant, fun and energetic classes on offer.
Harking back to the traditions of yesteryear, New Moves Tap proves everything old is new again bringing the best of Broadway & the golden era of Hollywood to a new generation of dancers.
Hip Hop
A high energy dance style seen in music videos & commercials. Hip Hop emerged from New York city in the 1970's & is often associated with rap music.
It started as break dancing (check out the movie Flashdance ) and developed into a range of street dance styles.
Today Hip Hop moves are seen in performance by artists such as Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliot. This is dance with attitude and the fastest growing dance style worldwide.
Jazz
Typically seen in Broadway type shows such as Cats and A Chorus Line . A structured, stage style of dance incorporating powerful kicks, turns and jumps and made famous by legendary choreographer, Bob Fosse.
Jazz/Funk
A fusion style bringing the best of jazz and hip hop together. Based on music from the pop charts and pop culture this is a great style for active, trendy kids.
Contemporary
Seen in TV show, So You Think You Can Dance , this free form style incorporates elements of many dance styles in a fusion of creative choreographed movement.
The style uses the torso to full advantage, depending on a flexible spine, abdominal strength and a sense of gravity. The style explores many themes and emotions making it a powerful tool of artistic expression.
